Candor is the brainchild of one of San Diego’s most established chef/restaurateurs, Giuseppe Ciuffa, founder of Giuseppe Restaurants & Fine Catering. Focusing on honest and straightforward cooking, as the restaurant’s name suggests, Candor draws inspiration from Giuseppe’s Italian roots.
Having grown up cooking with his mother on the family’s farm outside of Rome, his palate was primed at young age, shaped by a wealth of culinary opportunities from farms and vineyards, to local cheese and fish from coastal villages.
With an everything-made-in-house credo at Candor, Giuseppe sources from San Diego’s local farmers and fishermen, with a bulk of products coming direct from the La Jolla Open Aire Farmer’s Market located down the street. As a convivial neighborhood wine bar, Candor’s extensive menu plays favorites to producers from France, Spain and Italy as well as West Coast winemakers throughout California, Oregon and Washington.
Candor Comes Full-Circle
In 1994, Giuseppe, the Italian-born entrepreneur, came to the United States on sabbatical, only to fall head over heels for San Diego’s coastal charm. Four years later, Giuseppe opened his first solo project as chef/owner of Come On In! Café.
Located in the heart of La Jolla Village, the beloved café flourished as a staple in La Jolla’s social scene. It was a stepping stone for the expansion of Giuseppe Restaurants which saw former concepts within the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego and Museum of Art in Balboa Park, and today includes Caroline’s Seaside Café and La Sede, an event space for dinner pop-ups and private events that doubles as the company’s headquarters.
In 2003 Giuseppe sold Come On In! to create a catering empire that currently services over 300 events annually including weddings, high-profile charity galas, social gatherings, corporate functions, multi-day conferences, as well sporting events. In 2019, Giuseppe came home to reclaim the original Come On In! space to house Candor.
